Are the lights too bright?

If the lighting is too bright in a building then it goes without saying that energy is being wasted.

Light intensity in a space is known as the ‘lux level’. Lower lux levels will save energy; Australian Standard AS1680 defines the minimum lux level for offices as 320 lux and provides design guidelines for other aspects of lighting design and lighting quality.

Progressive improvements in lamp technology mean that older lighting installations are too bright with modern lamps. For most sites this is most cost-effectively resolve through refurbishment or replacement of the lighting system. Reducing the electrical power to the lights provides a direct energy saving but also reduces the load on the cooling plant, providing air-conditioning savings as well.
